EXPERIENCING HEARING LOSS?

Do You Relate to These Questions?

Do you have difficulties following a normal conversation or can’t hear properly in restaurants, parties, meetings and in social/family gatherings?
Do you feel that your family and friends are not speaking clearly or do you have trouble hearing children’s voices?
Do you have difficulties holding a conversation over the phone or do others complain about the TV being too loud?

DON'T IGNORE HEARING LOSS

Untreated hearing loss can have an adverse impact on the general quality of life and if you answered yes to any of these questions, it would be worthwhile to have your hearing thoroughly checked. Hearing loss makes it difficult to follow conversations, which can lead to a sense of isolation, fatigue and loneliness.

ASSESSMENTS: WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT

Comprehensive Tests

These comprehensive tests involve your clinical history, a pure tone audiogram to assess hearing ability for different sounds in the speech range, Tympanometry to assess middle ear function and a speech discrimination assessment.

The Ear & Sound

Sound waves travelling along the ear canal cause your eardrums to vibrate. This vibration is conducted to the ossicles, which are the three tiny bones in the middle ear. This chain of bones is attached to the oval window of the cochlea or inner ear.

The Inner Ear

The inner ear also contains the balance organs, including three semicircular canals. The cochlea is filled with fluid and has hair cells, which bend with the movement of fluid caused by the vibration. The activated hair cells send impulses via the acoustic nerve to the brainstem and the auditory cortex, which perceives these impulses as sound.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can occur simply because of wax blockage or an ear infection, while other causes can be more serious and affect the inner ear or nerve pathway.

Hearing loss associated with tinnitus, dizziness and/or a balance disorder needs to be investigated further in order to find the cause of the problem.
